  1. Bismarck, Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince von
  2. 1815-1898. German politician, prime minister
  3. of Prussia 1862-90 and chancellor of the
  4. German Empire 1871-90. He pursued an
  5. aggressively expansionist policy, waging wars
  6. against Denmark 1863-64, Austria 1866, and
  7. France 1870-71, which brought about the
  8. unification of Germany. Bismarck was
  9. ambitious to establish Prussia's leadership
  10. within Germany and eliminate the influence of
  11. Austria. He secured Austria's support for his
  12. successful war against Denmark then, in 1866,
  13. went to war against Austria and its allies
  14. (the Seven Weeks' War), his victory forcing
  15. Austria out of the German Bund and unifying
  16. the N German states into the North German
  17. Confederation under his own chancellorship
  18. 1867. He then defeated France, under Napoleon
  19. III, in the Franco-Prussian War 1870-71,
  20. proclaimed the German Empire 1871, and
  21. annexed Alsace-Lorraine. He tried to secure
  22. his work by the Triple Alliance 1881 with
  23. Austria and Italy but ran into difficulties
  24. at home with the Roman Catholic church and
  25. the socialist movement and was forced to
  26. resign by Wilhelm II 18 Mar 1890.
